Philharmonia Orchestra: Resident at De Montfort Hall

The Philharmonia Orchestra is a world-class symphony orchestra for the 21st century. Led by its Principal Conductor & Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia has a pioneering approach to the role of the modern-day symphony orchestra, reaching new audiences and participants through audience development, digital technology and learning and participation programmes. Based in London, but with residencies in cities throughout England and a thriving international touring programme and global digital reach, the Philharmonia engages with a world-wide audience.

Together with its relationships with the world’s most sought-after artists, most importantly its Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, the Philharmonia Orchestra is at the heart of British musical life. Alongside its programme of over 150 concerts per year across the world, the Philharmonia can often be found in the studio recording for CD and soundtrack for the latest film video game releases.

Beyond its London home at the iconic Southbank Centre, the Philharmonia has also been resident orchestra in Leicester since 1997 and during this time has played a central role in Leicester’s rich artistic life. Each Season consists of seven concerts, featuring the world’s leading conductors and soloists, performing the same repertoire we take to our London home as well as on tour to the likes of Europe, Asia and the USA. Artists for this season include some of the most established names in the classical music world including Jakub Hrůša, Hilary Hahn, Carl Davis and David Fray.

Beyond the platform, the Philharmonia runs an extensive programme of education and community projects working with a wide range of Leicester residents. Forthcoming projects include Symphonize, a pioneering creative partnership between Philharmonia and Soft Touch Arts working with marginalised teenagers in Leicester, blending classical repertoire and style with urban and electronic beats and Legend of the Sky, a world premiere in celebration of the rich cultural diversity of the area featuring massed choirs, Indian classical musicians, a large ensemble featuring steel pans and members of the Philharmonia.

The orchestra’s flagship schools concert series at De Montfort Hall, Orchestra Unwrapped, offers thousands of Leicester school children the opportunity to experience live music in an engaging and exciting way, accompanied by the educational resources to fully understand it. The 2017/18 season is the Philharmonia’s second year working in partnership with De Montfort University, Principal Partner of the Philharmonia’s De Montfort Hall residency. Together they cultivate a year-round programme of music-making which involves DMU students and staff and Philharmonia musicians. A student ambassador scheme connects students of the university with the Orchestra’s management team. The Philharmonia continues to work in partnership with the University of Leicester too, to support the activities of the University’s student-led Music Association, offering students the following opportunities -  individual instrument tuition with members of the Orchestra through a Scholarship Fund; coaching from Philharmonia players for the University's various orchestras and bands; and a student audience scheme providing students with the opportunity to attend Philharmonia concerts at De Montfort Hall at a discounted rate.
